Death by Choice or Nature: Examining Assisted Suicide in the Face of Degenerative Disease

Watching disease diminish a loved one's quality of life is challenging, but living with the threat of the same disease raises questions about the process of death. Should one slowly lose the ability to perform the activities that define one's life, or should the decision of death be placed in human hands? Through my own experience of watching my grandmother struggle with Parkinson's disease, this paper explores the legitimacy of assisted suicide when confronted with a debilitating disease. The intersection of personal rights and political limitations asks where an individual's power over their life ends and where society's power begins.
