Love, Lust, and Jealousy in A Midsummer Night's Dream
Victoria L. Kleitz
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

Between the confusing love circle of Helena, Lysander, Hermia, and Demetrius, the blinded love of Titania and Nick Bottom (as a donkey), and the reflection of Oberon and Titania's marriage in Theseus and Hippolyta's, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream focuses on the many trials, complexity, and fickleness of love. Although the fairy and human worlds are divided in this story, they are connected through the struggles of love that occur in both. This essay will explore the blurring of love and lust and the embedded role of jealousy in propelling the lovers to win the object of their love's desire. This essay will further examine how the play, though a comedy, probes the deeper meaning of love in depicting the blindness of love.
