Judaism and the Holocaust: Music as Expression and Resistance
Jazmyn T. Burnitt-Erp
Prof. Shirley McKamie, Faculty Mentor

Throughout the time of the Holocaust, music was of great importance to people of Jewish faith as they lived through this tragedy. This music exists now as a way of connecting to the horrors of the victims, as it is important to remember what happened to the Jews during this abysmal time. People of Jewish faith have been persecuted throughout the history of the world; the Nazi persecution and massacre of the Jews was not the first time they were sufferers of such anti-Semitism. Victims of the Holocaust were placed in ghettos, or concentration and death camps, where they were to await their fate as it was decided by Nazi authorities. These different places affected what the music meant to the victims, but it gave them all an opportunity to hold onto their faith.
