Effect of Elevated CO2 on Growth, Biomass Partitioning, and Phosphorus Uptake in Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) under Varied Nitrogen or Phosphorus Availability

We investigated the effect of elevated CO2 on: 1) growth and biomass partitioning of common bean plants cultured hydroponically under varied availability of nitrogen or phosphorus, and 2) the dynamics of phosphorus uptake. Our data indicate that under elevated CO2, biomass accumulation increases with greater N or P supply, and more biomass is partitioned into root tissue under low N or high P availability. Elevated CO2 leads to greater demand for and faster depletion of P during plant growth, although it does not affect the time needed to reach the maximum P uptake rate.
