The purpose of this action research study was to compare the differences in static balance between males and females ages five to eleven. The research was conducted during a gymnastics unit in a physical education classroom in an elementary school. Throughout the unit, 120 students, 20 from each grade, 10 females and 10 males, spent approximately five minutes on a balance beam demonstrating eight different scenarios of balance. Each scenario was timed beginning when the students foot was lifted off the ground and ended when his/her foot returned to the ground. Scenarios varied between preferred and non-preferred foot, eyes open and closed, and arms at sides and arms out to the sides making a T. Times were recorded in a table, when all data was collected the researcher compared the times of the females and males in each grade for statistical significance.
