The Impact of Science Journalism on Online Culture and Perceptions of Image Ethics
Desiree Teter
Dr. Scott Alberts and Dr. Marilyn Yaquinto, Faculty Mentors
This presentation concerns scientific study of visual arousal mechanisms, journalistic writing about such studies (including distribution and reader demographic information) and their relationship to online prurient photo-trading culture on websites like Reddit, the legalities (or lack thereof) surrounding it, and likely future developments in privacy and image control law/regulations. Additionally, empirical research will be conducted on the effects that readership of lay-writing on the science of visual arousal, especially as concerns sex/gender differences, may have on public opinion regarding the appropriate political and legal responses to non-consensual, sexualized image distribution. If conducting the study proves unfeasible additional work will be placed into cataloging the observations that lead to the hypothesis being formed.
