Women in Cinema: Examining the Lead Female Character in Movies during the Second Wave Feminist Movement (1940s- 1980s) to observe how the Roles of Women have changed throughout Time

This study examines the relationship between the second wave feminist movement and depiction of women in cinema in decades from the 1940s through the 1980s. The second wave feminist movement laid the foundation for women to assume new roles in the family and workplace, and to gain greater control over their own reproductive rights. The researcher recorded data for fifty romantic comedies that were rated among the top ten for each decade. The main variables that were examined were: marital status of the lead female character, job status of the lead female character, if the lead female character moved up in the workforce and the socio-economic status of the lead female character. The results of this study demonstrate changes in the social status of lead female characters portrayed in the movies throughout the decades of the second wave feminist movement.
