The Effects of Using a Rubric During Writing Conferences

Dr. Wendy Miner, Faculty Mentor
The purpose of this action research study was to examine the effects of explicit use of a rubric during writing conferences on second-grade student writing. The study took place during daily Writers Workshop where students conferred with the teacher about their writing. The rubric is derived from the Six Plus One Traits of Writing categories of ideas, organization, and conventions. All nineteen students were introduced to this rubric at the beginning of the school year. Half of the class received conference instruction directly related to a writing rubric checklist. The other half of the class received instruction during conferences, but was not explicitly directed to items on the rubric. In general, the strong writers in the class, as determined by quality of ideas and exceeding expectations in conventions, were hindered by the use of the use of the rubric during their conferences while the weaker writers benefitted from rubric instruction.
