Public School Inclusion and Skill Development among Children with Autism
Kyle G. Shaughnessy
Dr. Amber Johnson, Faculty Mentor
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between children with autism, their integration into the classroom, and their development of both academic and social skills. Using the ideas of sociologists such as George Herbert Mead, Herbert Blumer, and Charles Cooley, the developmental success of children with autism was analyzed using the social interactionist approach. Research was conducted observing an inclusive environment and development of social and academic skills using the social interactionst perspective. Although every student is different, a more inclusive environment for children with autism should be beneficial to the development of academic and social skills (both for these children and for their non-autistic peers).
