The Portrayal and Representation of Women in Mahfouz's Midaq Alley and Salih's Season of Migration to the North

Well-known novelists Naguib Mahfouz and Tayeb Salih wrote Midaq Alley and Season of Migration to the North in order to critique the poor socio-political situations in Egypt and Sudan, their respective nations, both of which were heavily shaped by the Western colonialism of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although Mahfouz and Salih used wildly different writing styles, each utilized female characters to bring social injustices toward women to light as well as to represent wider problems. This paper will analyze that use and treatment of female characters by Mahfouz and Salih. The ways in which the female characters were shaped by the authors' gender will also be examined, as well as how such shaping may have inhibited the messages the authors were trying to send and the changes they were attempting to inspire.
