Effect of Check-In Check-Out (CICO) Targeted Intervention on Struggling Middle School Students

New methods of intervention are being utilized for students who are considered "at risk in public schools nationwide; however, small school districts have limited data on whether the Check-in Check-Out Targeted Intervention (CICO) strategy in use is effective for struggling middle school students. Thus, a case study will be conducted with five seventh graders from a rural school district in northeast Missouri. CICO refers to a time period during which the students will receive mentoring in all academic areas, as well as organizational guidance at the beginning and end of every academic day. The intervention will use a daily points card system, in which the students join forces with their parents and their mentor in monitoring their own success. Upon conclusion, I expect that data I collect will show students to be practicing more accountable skills, showing that CICO does have an effect on student learning and student behavior.
