The Hymns of Martin Luther
Michael C. Bolle
Prof. Patricia Mickey, Faculty Mentor

Martin Luther aspired, through the Reformation, to bring the church service and all of its individual components back to the congregation. His momentous success is due, primarily, to his work with hymns. Instead of Latin, as was the common language used during the time of the Catholic dominance, Luther began writing hymns in German, the vernacular of his church congregation. This session will consist of an oral presentation and an auditory analysis of one of Luther’s hymns. I will briefly explore Luther’s life and the impact he had on Western Christianity through his music.
