The Miniaturization of Integrated Circuits

Since the creation of the first integrated circuit in the mid-twentieth century, dramatic advancements have been made in the design and production process. New and innovative uses for electronics and consumer demand have driven engineers to strive for faster, more powerful, more efficient, and more compact circuits. Further complicating the challenge is the economic need for new innovations to be mass producible. The evolution of the integrated circuit will be discussed, and the current state of the technology will be reviewed. Prospects for the continuation of trends in miniaturization will be considered in light of limitations grounded in the basic laws of physics.
