An Ideological Analysis of 24

The television show 24 is one of the most popular and acclaimed dramas on air. After six seasons it has received a total of 57 Emmy nominations. Not only does its popularity call for a critical analysis of the show, but its heavy use of symbolism makes it a perfect candidate for an ideological examination into the meanings of the messages conveyed. Through the use of an ideological analysis, 24 is shown to promote the status-quo of society by the reaffirmation of the supremacy of the dominant class over the subordinate classes in America. The essay also illustrates how the show capitalizes on current political and social crises to perpetuate its messages. In 24, the dominant American ideologies reaffirming the status quo of its hierarchical class system include individualism, the strong family, and the elevation of the cultural majority.
