Evaluation of Amylomaize VII Hybrids Developed from Lines Derived from the Germplasm Enhancement of Maize Project

Using a Randomized Block Design, we tested 80 new Amylomaize VII hybrids in cooperation with the USDA Germplasm Enhancement of Maize Project. These parents were derived from tropical varieties of Maize and were evaluated in order to identify those with a high general combining ability (GCA), which made them good candidates for potential new hybrid lines. These hybrid varieties were analyzed in the field, allowed to open pollinate, and are being evaluated for desirable traits after being harvested. Of the Stiff-stalk type inbreds, CHIS775:S1911b-120-1-B-B-B////AR16035:S02-615-1-B-B///GUAT209:S13//OH43ae/H99ae had the best GCA with the average of all hybrids possessing it as a parent being 94.5 bu/ac. Of non-stiff stalk inbreds, DKXL370:N11a20-234-2-B-B-B////DKSL370:N11A20-32-2-1-B-B///GUAT209:S13//OH43ae/H99ae performed the best with an average yield of 107.4 bu/ac.
