Adding a Yeast Culture Preparation to a Complete Trace Mineral Mix and its Effect on Performance of Grazing Cow/Calf Pairs

An investigation into the efficacy of supplying a novel strain of yeast culture to grazing beef cows in a complete trace mineral mix throughout the grazing season and its effects on cow condition was conducted. The trial also aimed to find out if an ad libitum mineral supplement is a viable medium for consistent delivery of such a yeast product. The yeast products are reported to increase fiber digestion, in particular the Acid Detergent Fiber fraction of cells walls that is made of cellulose and lignin. The project is of importance in the cattle industry because the milk production of the cattle may increase, which will provide a basis for the positive view of yeast inclusion in mineral mixes. It has been stated that ruminant nutritionists believe supplemental yeast is beneficial to cattle in the enhancement of dry matter digestion and overall cow performance (Feed Management 2007).
