Reshaping the Curriculum: An Examination Using Charlotte Smith

Questions such as “Who chooses the canon?” and “Who is marginalized by the canon?” incite passionate critical debates in the field of English Education. Many educators are eager to rethink the canon and incorporate marginalized works into their classrooms, but they face practical concerns. First, they must learn to teach unfamiliar works. Secondly, they feel pressure to add formerly ignored works and maintain the current curriculum. When used together, Annette Kolodny’s and Robert Scholes’ ideas provide guidance on reading and teaching these texts. My paper applies their theories to a specific lesson plan on Romantic poet Charlotte Smith and Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, revealing how these ideas can be practiced in the classroom.
