Despite recent restocking attempts, the Greater Plains Prairie Chicken populations in Northern Missouri are decreasing. This research, during an internship with the Missouri Department of Conservation, attempted to answer the question, “What are the current conditions of private lands within the Mystic Plains Conservation Opportunity Area that might aid the recovery of prairie chickens with in the COA?” ArcGIS, a Geographic Information System, was utilized to spatially represent landowner holdings, Conservation Reserve Program acreage, woody encroachment on ridge-tops, and compare aerial photography from 1957 and 2003. The research was preliminary and meant to show the possibilities of GIS applications.
