The purpose of this study is to test the difference in the rate of lactate removal between endurance and strength/power athletes. Five endurance and four power athletes completed a six minute Astrand test to obtain an estimated VO2max. Subjects returned on a later day to complete five 10 second Wingate tests with one minute breaks between each. Athletes then completed a 30 minute recovery period at 50% of their predicted VO2 max. Blood lactate was tested pre-exercise, three minutes post exercise and at six minute intervals during recovery (t= 6, 12, 18, 24, 30). Values were compared between treatments using a 2x7 repeated measures ANOVA. Significant time effects were observed for lactate removal (p = 0.015). There was no significant difference in rates of removal between endurance and strength athletes during active recovery (p=0.4). Future research may suggest other mechanisms of lactate clearance.
