Probing the Effects of Sterics and Electronics on Lead’s Coordination Chemistry

High exposure to lead can cause severe damage to biological systems. The treatment for lead poisoning is chelation therapy, but the currently used treatment chelating agents are not metal specific, leading to complicated treatment regimes. To better understand lead’s in vivo toxicity and to provide a basis for the future development of lead-specific chelating agents, this project will investigate the role that the ligand’s steric demands and electronic properties have on the structure and lead coordination complexes. The research will focus on substituted derivatives of the tripodal ligand tris-(2-pyridylmethyl) amine.
