Teaching English in China: A Study in Proficiency and its Effect on Conferences with Second Language Students in the University Writing Center
Jennifer M. Coolidge
Dr. Betsy Delmonico, Faculty Mentor
Because the Writing Center is a primary source for second-language (L2) students it needs to be approached by consultants from an informed perspective that allows the client to gain as much from the conference as possible, furthering the Truman State University Writing Center’s commitment to producing better writers, not just better writing. This study of comparative proficiencies in 14-16 year old Chinese students conducted in the Hunan Province indicates that written English receives more concentration in secondary bilingual education than do the skills associated with verbal communication. Awareness of the communicative strengths and weaknesses of L2 students and the implementation of adaptable methods of communication between consultants and international clients is important to the success of the University Writing Center as a resource for L2 students.
