The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of the Army-175 Test developed at the United State Military Academy for general use. High school athletes (HS, n = 19), and untrained (UT, n = 14) and trained (TR, n = 17) college students volunteered to perform a 1-RM free-weight bench press and repetitions-to-fatigue (RTF) using 175 lbs. The two tests were performed on different days. The three groups were not significantly different in their 1-RM, RTF, or %1-RM. The Army-175 prediction equation non-significantly under-predicted HS by 3.4 ± 10.8 lbs and significantly under-predicted UT by 12.6 ± 9.0 lbs and TR by 16.4 ± 11.0 lbs. Multiple regression produced a new equation in which RTF accounted for 81% and training level accounted for 19% of the total variance (R2 x 100 = 58%). Therefore, the Army-175 may not adequately predict 1-RM bench press in non-military personnel.
