Compositional Techniques of Elliott Carter found in his "Eight Pieces for Four Timpani"
Megan E. Arns
Dr. Michael Bump, Faculty Mentor

Elliott Carter (1908- ), a prominent 20th century composer, experimented with many new rhythmically complex compositional techniques throughout his late period (after 1950). In this presentation, I will discuss examples of Carter's innovative techniques found in his "Eight Pieces for Four Timpani". Because these pieces were written as rhythmic studies for his "String Quartet No. 1", I will identify similarities between the two works. I will also perform excerpts from "Eight Pieces for Four Timpani" to demonstrate and emphasize the compositional techniques discussed.
