Bellini's Tre Ariette: More Than a Few Pretty Songs
Diana L. Upton-Hill♦
Dr. Warren Gooch and Dr. Jacqueline Collett, Faculty Mentors

Tre Ariette is a set of three songs by nineteenth-century Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini. These songs can be noted as representative examples of the composer’s general style and overall output. Each song employs the “bel canto” vocal style, contains flowing and florid melodic lines, and exhibits an intimate relationship between the dramatic text and musical setting. This presentation intends to demonstrate the text/music relationship through the use of macro-analytical techniques. The presentation will involve performance of the music.
