The House Calls program is an interdisciplinary, geriatrics-oriented learning experience that was started in 1998 to help medical and undergraduate students to build knowledge, skills and positive attitudes pertaining to high-quality care of the elderly. Through the activities and experiences in the House Calls Program, students should increase awareness of the various myths and stereotypes related to older people, be aware of their attitudes on their own aging, disability, and death and how it may affect their work. A team consisting of one nursing student, one medical student, a speech and hearing student, and health education student will visit their geriatric patient four times in a twelve to fourteen month period. Each visit has a set of objectives, activities, and/or questions to be completed during that visit. The objective for the elderly patient is to improve their quality of living through mental and physical screenings.
